Realities of Development

Development Day is a day-long conference, helping participants explore the intricacies of human development, participatory approaches, and EWB's methodology. It forms a strong foundation for future discussions and workshops, as well as bringing together like-minded people in a casual, yet intensive setting.

Schedule

9:30 -- 10:00 Registration
Introductions, mingle time, and an ice-breaker.

10:00 - 10:05 -- Introduction
Quick introduction on the theme lead by Camila Campos Herrera.

10:05 - 11:35 -- Understanding Rural Livelihoods
Lead by Yazan Kawar, Maria Curro, Shankar Manoharan & Summaiya Siddiqui. This workshop examines the different activities undertaken by community members to earn a livelihood and sustain themselves as individuals,households, and communities, and how they will be differently affected by development projects.

11:35 - 12:35 -- Green Revolution
This workshop, facilitated by Camila Campos Herrera and Anastassia Pogoutse, discusses the positive and negative impacts of the Green Revolution. Using a fun and interactive simulation game, participants gain a deeper understanding of the difficult choices that rural households in developing countries face.

12:40 - 1:10 -- LUNCH
Lunch will be provided. Food with both vegetarian and vegan options. Fair Trade refreshments will be served throughout the day.

1:20 - 2:35 -- Realities of Overseas Volunteering: Learn First Hand
This workshop lead by Rehanna Devraj-Kizuk, establishes connections between overseas volunteers and you. Learn about the realities of overseas development work, what challenges they face, and how they are overcome.

2:35 - 3:50 -- Learning from the Field: Community Lead Total Sanitation
An interactive workshop co-facilitated by returned volunteer Mike Klassen and his Zambian counterpart Alfred Mungamelo. Learn about the approach of Community Led Total Sanitation through the eyes of a field worker. This is a chance to problem solve real challenges being faced on the ground, and wrap-up with a live phone call to Alfred in Zambia.

3:50 - 4:00 -- Wrap Up
Rehanna Devraj-Kizuk will be leading this wrap-up.
